How To Care For Your Eyes

Your eyes are the window to the world. It's important that you take care of them. Don't take your eye health for granted. Diet and regular exercise are important factors in eye care. Protect your eyesight with these tips.

1. Eat healthy food to maintain good vision

Regularly eat healthy food like:

  • Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, sprouts, and bell pepper
  • Salmon, Sardines, Tuna, and other oily fish
  • Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources
  • Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices

Studies have shown that the above contain nutrients such as omega-3s fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E that may help avert age-related vision problems. Eating a well-balanced diet also helps you maintain a healthy weight, which makes you less likely to get obesity-related eye problems.

2. Use cucumber on your eyelids

Press cold cucumber slices against your eyelids for 10 minutes, before going to sleep every night. This will prevent puffiness of the eyes. Cucumbers contain ingredients that prevent water retention.

3. Quit smoking for better eyesight

Smoking can lead to cataract in the eyes, optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration. One should give up on smoking at the earliest to avoid eye problems.

4. Avoid prolonged wear of contact lens

Do not wear your contact lenses for more than 19 hours at a stretch. It can cause extreme discomfort to your eyes and in some cases, lead to eyesight damage. Never go to sleep with your contact lens on. Lenses block the flow of Oxygen to the eye, and can cause permanent damage.

5. Wear UV protective sunglasses

Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause cataract of the eye, pterygia and other eye problems. Always wear the right kind of sunglasses that will protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.
